Diazepam
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of excessive anxiety & tension in psychoneurotic patients including those w/ somatic manifestations; acute agitation, tremor & impending acute delirium tremens in acute alcoholic w/drawal. Adjunct to spasticity relief in neuromuscular disorders (eg, cerebral palsy & athetosis).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 4-40 mg daily in divided doses. Symptomatic relief of excessive anxiety & tension Psychoneurotic patient 4-40 mg daily in divided doses (bd-tds). Adjunct for spasticity relief in neuromuscular disorders (eg, cerebral palsy & athetosis) 6-30 mg daily in divided doses. Elderly & debilitated patient Initially 2 mg once daily or bd, gradually increase as needed & tolerated.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ myasthenia gravis or glaucoma. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not recommended in psychotic or severely depressed patients. Not to be used in ambulatory patients suspected of having psychotic tendencies. Epileptic patients; avoid abrupt w/drawal of diazepam. Addiction-prone individuals; may precipitate acute w/drawal symptoms including convulsions w/ abrupt cessation of large doses of diazepam after prolonged periods; gradually discontinue use. Carefully consider use when combined w/ other psychotropic agents (eg, phenothiazines, barbiturates, MAOIs & other antidepressants). Simultaneous ingestion of alcohol & other CNS depressants during therapy. May affect mental alertness & physical coordination. Renal & hepatic impairment. Advise periodic blood counts & LFTs if administered for protracted periods. Elderly & debilitated patients or those w/ organic brain disorders.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness & ataxia. Leucopenia, jaundice, hypersensitivity & paradoxical reactions (eg, hyperexcited states, anxiety, excitement, hallucinations, increased muscle spasticity, insomnia, rage, sleep disturbances & stimulation).
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ cimetidine. May potentiate action w/ alcohol, antidepressants, antihistamines, opioid analgesics, phenothiazine. Avoid concomitant use w/ alcohol.
